Workplace violence is the threat of violence or violence against workers. It can occur at or outside the workplace and can range from hearts and verbal abuse to physical assaults and homicide, one of the leading causes of job- related deaths.
Injury and violence are a threat to health in every country. It accounts for 9% of global mortality- more than five million deaths every year. Eight of the 15 leading causes of death for people between the ages of 15 and 29 years are injury-related according to who.
The five types of workplace violence incidents
- Type one- criminal intent

- Type 3 – worker-to- worker
- Type 4 – domestic violence
- Type 5 – ideological violence
If you have been threatened at your workplace, or have been the victim of physical violence at work, report it immediately to your supervisor and detail the incident in writing.
The occupations with the highest risk of fatal injury are drivers, police, private guards, and managers of food serving and lodging establishments.
The most common forms of workplace violence are low level, aggressive and hostile encounters, and domestic violence impacting job performance and security.
To constitute a hostile work environment, the behavior must discriminate against a protected group of people. That includes race, color, religion, gender, pregnancy, national origin, age, disability, or genetic information.
Examples of workplace violence are; rumors, sweating, verbal abuse, property damage, vandalism, anger-related incidents, physical assaults, psychological trauma, rape, arson, and murder.
How to prevent workplace violence
- Create a policy that prevents harassment
- Create an effective line of communication
- Training sessions on workplace violence prevention
- Encourage employees to embrace individual differences.
